About.

Conrad Shiba plays traditional and contemporary folk music on banjo, guitar, hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, ukulele, and banjo uke.  He has been a performer for over 50 years. Originally hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Shiba's first instrument was the ukulele, then he soon began playing folk guitar, inspired by many of the singer-songwriters and topical singers of the 1960s.  He took up clawhammer banjo after graduating from college and began to perform extensively in Columbus, Ohio.  After two graduate degrees and a couple of teaching jobs, he ended up in Danville, Kentucky, where he was one of the original members of the Raggedy Robin String Band.  RRSB performed at many folk festivals and other functions from 1982-90 and appeared in the television movie "Bluegrass" before disbanding.  In the years since, Shiba has performed in a variety of venues.  From 2012-16 he co-directed and performed with Centre College's Kentucky Ensemble, a student string band.  A highlight of this time was a 10-day tour of a select touring group from the Ensemble in New York and New England. Shiba now performs solo and with various assemblages of old-time musicians in the central Kentucky area.  Recent performances have included the Fraley Festival of Traditional Music, Pioneer Playhouse, the Constitution Square Festival, and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington.  In 2023 he was part of a Sister Cities exchange that sent six Kentucky musicians to Northern Ireland for a week of performances. He is often seen at the Monday night jams at Old North Bar in Lexington, KY.  In a past life, Shiba taught chemistry and geology at Centre College for 37 years and spent time climbing volcanoes and teaching students about them.
